Overton (23pts) beat Steeple Langford by 24 Runs
Match Report
Overton claimed their first win in HCL Regional North 1 in a very competitive encounter with Steeple Langford
For the first time this season a cricket match was played in the sunshine. A very green strip was the result of the wet May and this influenced the visitors decision to bowl after winning the toss.
Overton openers Dave Pitt (31) and Graham Devereux (34) had laid a solid foundation for the innings which ended when Devereux was caught with the score on 66. The introduction of spinner Chris Burrows achieved quick results firstly stumping Dave Pitt after tempting him down the track. Two balls later big hitter, Will Kinnear (4) couldn't resist and was caught on the boundary soon followed by Andy Wakes LBW. Overton were left on 82 for 4.
Jimmy Maxwell (28) was finally able to get on top of the spinner, hitting three big sixes and persuading the visiting skipper into a change of tactics. Change bowler Nick Penny claimed the valuable wicket of skipper Andy Galvin (17). After Maxwell was bowled Andy Regan attacked the Steeple Langford bowlers scoring his first league fifty from 42 balls ending unbeaten on 56.
After his batting heroics Andy Regan (0-40) couldn't maintain his usual pace and was rested after just three overs. This brought Andy Wake (1-26) into the attack and he was able to remove the first of the Steeple Langford overs. A superb run out by Graham Devereux and then the first of Steve Smiths (3-24) wickets kept the game in the balance, this innings mirroring the first. Andy Galvin (5-31) introduced himself and started his phenomenal spell with the wicket of danger man Will Lomax. A superb caught & bowled followed and momentum was slowly shifting back toward Overton. Steeple Langford were always in with a chance as long as Rob Emms remained at the wicket however some clever bowling and sharp fielding restricted his opportunity and allowed the Overton bowlers to focus on the tail enders, smith taking the final wicket leaving the chase 24 runs short.
