Match Report
Overton lose despite a valiant run chase in April darkness
So I've been a bit busy and as a result I'm a little late but here goes a brief match report.
It was a cold and wet April day. Perfect cricket weather! The only thing missing from our journey to Amport was Michael Palin and his film crew. Wrong turn after wrong turn meant the majority of the team arrived an hour after leaving Overton - just 20 minutes away!
Phil Hoare had tossed instead of the expedition leader, Andy Galvin and Overton found themselves in the field bowling on yet another artificial wicket. Opening with Phil Hoare (0-21) and Nick Tomlin (1-23) Overton did well to contain the Amport batsman on a perfect batting wicket. The fielding was much better than previous weeks and although difficult in the damp conditions the first wicket fell when the Amport opener sent one into the heavens. Now it must be noted that as soon as it went skywards John McCririck set up his stall and started taking bets. The ball soon became the favourite. However in a moment of sporting amazment the ball stuck to Steve Blundens hands and the Amport batsman was on his way back to the pavillion.
Economical support from Gary Wilson (0-21) and Steve Smith (0-17) followed before guest player Lord Mark Hampson of Hursbourne (3-23) & skipper Andy Galvin (3-44) were able to get through a few wickets. James Maxwell (0-18) was the last of the seven bowlers used.
Sir Hampson (27) opened the batting with our very own Gary "Goldie" Matson (27). His solid innings helped keep Overton in the game. Unfortunatley Gary "Twentie Seven" Matson doesn't sound as good as Goldie so that nick name remains. Andy Galvin (7) & Steve Blunden (3) were both bowled by one of the Amport first team bowlers in the fading light. Overtons Great White Hope, James Maxwell (44) then took the crease and once his eyes adjusted to the light (he must eat a lot of carrots!) bludgeon his way through the Amport attack. Supported by Phil Hoare (22*) with his "it's not over until the fat lady sings" attitude were able to put Overton in a position where they only needed a run a ball. Unfornatley Maxwell was bowled 1st ball of the last over. King Duck, Chris Shaw (0), carried on his good form. Hoare then needed 5 off 2 to win but unfortunatley it was not to be as Overton fell just one run short.
Despite being the second defeat of the season the spirit was there and this game provided something from which to build from. Jimmy showed he can still come in and score quick runs, Lexy has the head to prove the difference in these close games and Goldie offers options at the top of the batting order.
