With the new season fast approaching we look forward to the new challenges that Regional North One will present.
Our squad is largely unchanged. We still possess one of the best bowling attacks in the area and with many options available to us with the bat we can be optimistic about our chances.
Last Seasons Division 2 Champions
Standing - Will Kinnear, Nick Parnell-Smith, Nick Tomlin, Jimmy Adams (Hampshire CCC), Gary Wilson, Dave Pitt, Lee Heaver, Steve Smith, James Maxwell, Andy Galvin, Stuart Allen
Kneeling - Steve Blunden, Chris Shaw, Andy Wake, Simon Trott, Gary Matson, Andy Regan, Nick Wood
Last season the top two ran away with it with Rotherwick ITW being crowned champions in their first season following an extra promotion the season before.
Andy Galvin remains the skipper and has spent the off season reading works by some of the great captains in the game. Mike Brearly, Michael Vaughan, Freddie Flintoff, Bernie Proctor, Geoff Boycott and Robin Smith. This new knowledge of the game combined with his raw talent and competitiveness should bode well for the season. An insider also tells me that following his disappointing season with the coin he has been tossing regularly this winter.
Subject to work patterns top bowler Andy Regan returns and is now well into his pre season fitness regime and has shown good form in the nets. He has also moved to a new "High Tech Conditioning Base" and as a result experts predict a massive increase in his ability to consume alcohol
Combining with previous winner Andy Wake and all rounder Andy Galvin this will provide the back bone of our bowling attack once again. All rounders Phil Hoare, Richie Smith & Jimmy Maxwell and bowlers Steve Smith, Nick Tomlin & Gary Wilson mean that Overton enter the season with a formidable bowling attack.
All our batsman return although big hitter runner-up, Will Kinnear, will miss the first few matches. The top order have all been netting in an effort to avoid any early season collapses. On it's day the batting can go right down to 10 or even 11 so competition for places and different roles will be fierce. Key names to watch out for include openers Graham Devereux, Dave Pitt as well as middle order players such as Gary Matson.
Glove-man Nick Wood retains his role as first choice keeper although this author will continue to provide his back up.
Umpire Bernie Proctor has been working on his hand signals while driving in the continent and scorer Faye Trott has her pens at the ready!
Each week I will preview the forthcoming fixture looking at key players, past & current performances and anything else I can get my hands on.
Let the fun begin!!!
