Oakley beat Overton by 51 runs
Match Report
Despite a top order collapse Overton nearly managed to do an Australia and earn a draw against Oakley on Sunday.
Winning the toss Overton skipper Nick Parnell-Smith opted to field first. Opening the bowling Gary Wilson (1-44) offered a probing length and was almost on his knees by the end of his 13th over. Lee Heaver (2-36) managed to exploit the pitch with his height. An awesome catch from Will Kinnear diving low to his right claimed Heaver's second wicket.
Turning to Spin, Hitesh Patel weaved some magic but failed to beat the Oakley defence returning figures of 0-34 from his 10 overs. The skipper (2-18) replaced Wilson and managed to continue his wicket taking form. Will Kinnear was attacked from the start going for 54 from his 5 overs while Galvin (2-16) kept the other end in check. Oakley finished on 213-7 in 41 overs.
Overton then capitulated as Oakley found demons in the wicket. The top 5 only scoring 10 off the bat and Andy Thrift & Stuart Allen finding themselves looking at a score board of 18 for 5.
Overton is not renowned for a strong lower order but on this occasion proved things can still happen with 7th, 8th and 10th wicket partnership all seasons best. Firstly Thrift (12) and Allen (21) stopped the rot before Simon Trott (47) joined Allen at the crease and they put on a partnership of 55. Trott was the 9th wicket to fall after previously contributing to a partnership of 35 with Patel(8). The score was now on 127 but there was still 14 overs to go. Up stepped Gary Wilson (0) and Lee Heaver (6*) who valiantly defended their wickets. The frustration began to tell as Oakley threw everything at them and started to lose their line. The partnership passed 25 with both batsmen still on zero. This changed when Heaver pulled for 2 then 4. Wilson was finally trapped LBW with just 23 balls to go. This 10th wicket stand yielding 35 runs…….but only 6 off the bat.
