Nottingham Tour - September 2006
After years of talking it finally happened, Overton went on a cricket tour!!
It started on a glorious sunny Friday (you could not have wished for a better weekend for weather). Les, Steve Smith and myself set off on Friday morning with a car full of cricket bags and golf bags. A nice drive up to Thurgarton saw us meet up with Will who had traveled up earlier. We checked into our B & B and headed off to the golf course.
Will had organized some of his old team mates to play against us. Les kitted himself out with black school trousers and Grey Nicholls cricket shoes (I'm sure they were shitting themselves - we really looked the part). We left smudger in the bar and made our way to the first tee. Three Thurgarton players went first, all of their drives straight down the middle!!
Les, Will and myself decided that we were going to get value for money and take as many shots as possible!! Les was the winner, he took the most shots!! The remaining three Thurgarton players stood and watched as we struggled to hit it past the ladies tee!!
An enjoyable round with the sun beating down, we managed to talk our cricket up and had Thurgarton worried with talk of our aging squad!!
We finished at the golf and headed to the pub to meet up with the rest of the touring squad. The Tomlins turned up, followed by NPS and MC Wilko and eventually Dave Pitt (he had left at 11am). We all sat down, had dinner and a few beers.
Having managed to empty the bar of fellow drinkers we made our way over to Thurgarton's other pub (a very lively place). It was then decided that we would play a stupid game, which I still don't understand!! 'Nuff said.
Saturday morning and the weather was fantastic. Paul James Myers and his missus joined the party as did Nick Buxton. We had breakfast and headed to the ground. It was decided that we would start warming up. Nicky T put his pads on and was really looking the part in Thurgarton's bouncy nets, this was until his own father managed to hit him in the side. He was forced to sit out the first game!
Thurgarton arrived and we agreed to play two 20Twenty games with Overton bowling first in the first game and vice versa in the next. It was also decided that the first game would be all out for the win and the second game would ensure everyone got a game.
We bowled and fielded very well, restricting them to 98. Les decided that he would start bowling properly and picked up a few wickets. The Thurgarton batsmen worried about our whippets in the field, NPS was lightning!
Will was sent out to open, BOOM!! Six off the first ball!! Then in typical Overton fashion we gave wickets away. Managed to squeeze to victory with a penalty '5' runs in the last over.
The tea was lovely and then we were straight out to bat again. We struggled along to 84 off 16 overs. Thurgarton were all out for the win. They sent out some very 'strict' umpires and were able to get the target the deserved with the loss of 6 wickets.
It was agreed that both teams were evenly matched and a thoroughly enjoyable day was had by all. We had a few beers with the team in their clubhouse and then back to the B&B to get changed.
Some nice guys from the Thurgarton team drove us to Southwell and joined us for some more beers. We then left them in the pub whilst the Overton lads went for a curry. After the curry we were all completely knackered and headed back in a taxi to the B&B.
A big thank you must go to Thurgarton who made us feel very welcome and contributed to a great day of cricket. But the biggest thank you has to go to Will Kinnear. We have spent years talking about a tour without ever doing anything about it. Will took it entirely upon himself to sort out the tour and what a great job he did for us all. Well done mate!
